Tea for Three cafe is a tribute to my hometown, Moscow, where I discovered a world of sandwich shops, canteens, cafes, and restaurants, and fell in love with them. These places usually served some main dish which could be dumplings, pancakes, sandwiches or liquor. Unlike fast-food, they never tried to become an organized and incorporated system, embracing the chaos of unpredictabilty instead. Blessed is a man who has found on his life path a good canteen, and woe to the ones who were tricked away from this path and thrown into a bad dumpling shop!
The name “tea for three” comes from tea, a drink we serve, and a traditional Russian way of enjoying shared drinks: three people make a company of an ideal size. Our tables are high and do not have any chairs; they are designed to accommodate three people, although one, two and even four is an option too. Please note that we do not have public restrooms.
We serve black and green tea year around, house made kvas in summer, and a selection of juices. We do not have a liquor license; customers are free to bring and consume their own drinks.
Our food selection includes hot sausage with green peas and cabbage, open sandwiches with cold cuts (cheese, smoked salmon or sausage) and various desserts.
Our baking classes take place at the bakery on Saturdays, consist of 3-6 people and typically last 2-3 hours. All the ingredients and equipment are provided and included in the cost of the class. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. Students will learn how to make a preferment, how to mix and knead dough, shape, score, bake and cool a loaf of bread. During waiting time between stages of making bread, class participants will receive relevant historical and practical information. Since bread baking is not messy (when done the right way), any casual clothes will work well.
Usually it takes many hours (sometimes days) to make a loaf of bread, so we have done some of the work in advance. Students will still learn all the steps necessary to apply new knowledge at home. Advanced booking and prepayment are required. The registration deadline is three days before the class. If less than 3 students have registered by the deadline, the class is canceled and all tuition is refunded. There is a full refund when booking is canceled 48 hours or more before the class; if it is canceled any time later, you will receive a 50% refund.
At the moment we offer three classes for adults (Jewish Rye, Russian White and Challah) conducted either in Englsih or in Russian, and one class for children (in Russian only). There is a tentative schedule available at Picktime and Facebook; this schedule can be changed or adjusted when registered participants have such a wish and contact the bakery no later than three days before the class via email.
